File & Message Encryptor
Encrypt files and private messages locally in your browser.
Create an encrypted copy
Select one file, choose a strong passphrase, and save a separate authenticated .venc copy. The original file is only read and is never overwritten.
File and password
Use at least 12 characters; a long, unique passphrase is safer.
Restore the original file
Select a compatible .venc file, enter its exact password, and save a restored copy.
Encrypted file and password
Encrypt and decrypt private messages
Turn ordinary text into portable authenticated ciphertext beginning with VMSG1:. Send the encrypted text and password through separate channels.
1Input
Type a normal message to encrypt, or paste a VMSG1: message to decrypt.
Encryption requires at least 12 characters. Decryption requires the exact original password.
2Result
Copy encrypted text to send it, or read the authenticated plaintext after decryption.
Using This Tool: Guide & Notes Show guide
The File & Message Encryptor encrypts one file or a text message locally in your browser using a password-derived AES-256-GCM key. It creates a separate encrypted result and never needs to upload the content you select.
How to use it
- For a file, choose Encrypt file, select one file, and enter the same strong password in both password fields.
- Save the new .venc copy, then keep its password somewhere separate and secure. The original file is only read and is not overwritten.
- To restore a file, choose Decrypt file, select the .venc copy, and enter the exact password used for encryption.
- For text, choose Messages, enter a message and password, then copy the VMSG1 result. The recipient can paste that result and use the same password to decrypt it.
Options and settings
- Generate strong password creates a 30-character password with secure browser randomness and unbiased character selection.
- Show and Hide reveal a password only while you need to check it. Copy password uses the browser clipboard and should be followed by clearing sensitive clipboard history when appropriate.
- Direct file streaming is used when the browser supports secure file writing. Otherwise, the completed output is assembled in memory before download.
- Files are processed in 4 MiB chunks; messages are limited to 8 MiB and are designed for shorter text rather than large documents.
Notes
- There is no password recovery. A lost password means the encrypted content cannot be restored.
- Send an encrypted file or message and its password through separate channels. Anyone who obtains both can decrypt the content.
- AES-GCM detects a wrong password or altered encrypted data; PBKDF2-SHA-256 makes password guessing more expensive but cannot make a weak password strong.
- This browser tool and its custom format have not undergone an independent professional security audit. Prefer mature audited software for exceptionally sensitive, regulated, or high-risk material.
- Encryption does not protect against malware, browser extensions, screen capture, clipboard history, or a compromised device.
